The Birkenhead Heritage Society was founded in 1979 and is committed to preserving Birkenhead's past for future generations. Our purpose is to acknowledge, treasure and share Birkenhead and Northcote's history, and engage the community to be part of its preservation. The new Birkenhead Heritage Society logo draws on the traditional colours of heritage – the cream of parchment paper and the deep velvet maroon representing the rich fabric of our history. The blue and green are nods to our water and bush surroundings, also important parts of our heritage.
The stylised B highlights several key parts of Birkenhead’s story: the ferries that used to bring residents and visitors here long before the bridge; the strawberries that once grew lushly in our fields; and the houses, big and small, that were built many years ago and still stand proud today.
The flora represents the significant bush coverage in our area and the koru wave is an acknowledgement of the water and of the strong Māori history in Birkenhead.
